Over Memorial Day weekend (May 28-31) there will be a chamber music play-in at Tehachapi, California. This is in a beautiful mountain valley setting and is the perfect getaway from civilization and play til you drop opportunity. For only 80 dollars, they will put you up in someone's home for 3 nights and feed you all you can eat, Friday through Monday. Saturday evening, a concert is performed for the local community (everyone that wants to just works up a movement of a piece they like), and there is a community BBQ on Sunday, which usually includes folk music jamming. I've done this the past 2 years and had a blast. There are usually players with all levels of ability. In the past it has been mostly strings, but several wind players have attended each year, and there are usually 2-4 pianists that show up, so there are all sorts of wonderful cobinations possible. The play-in is organized by Debbie Hand, who owns Mountain Music in Tehachapi. She has an extensive library, but everyone is encouraged to bring their favorite repertoire or stuff they'd like to try out. If you can't make it for the full weekend but would like to come for just one or two of the days, it's just 25 dollars a day. I spoke with Debbie recently, and she said they have fewer string players signed up this year than in the past, so I've been charged with recruiting more! But whatever your instrument, if you live in the southwestern US (or anywhere else!) and can get to Tehachapi for Memorial Day weekend...try it, you'll like it!! Email me directly at tedh@dri.edu if you are interested, or you can call me at (702) 895-0419 or 434-2519 for more info. Hope to hear from you soon! Ted Hartwell, cellist Las Vegas, Nevada
