Third Annual Chamber Music Workshop

at

Round Top Center for the Arts

Rescheduled to March 5, 2000

Round Top Center for the Arts will host the third annual chamber music workshop for amateur string players on Sunday, January 23, 2000. The day-long workshop brings Maine's DaPonte String Quartet to Round Top to coach amateur string ensembles, conduct a master class, and hold an open rehearsal in which the audience is invited to get a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how a professional string quartet hones its craft.

Round Top Director, Nancy Freeman said, "To hear the sounds of music coming from every room, and to be the catalyst for serious amateur musicians to have the opportunity to work with a quartet the caliber of the DaPonte, is an important element in Round Top's goals. We bring serious art and education coming together in our beautiful, tranquil setting, and I look forward to this event every year".

DSQ violinist Dean Stein said, "These workshops are rigorous and demanding, but the level of satisfaction at the end of the day is what musicians at all levels strive for".

Participants in the workshop will gather at RTCA at 9 a.m. on January 23. After introductions and coffee, the coaching sessions begin. Most of the quintets, quartets, trios, and duos are pre-existing groups that have been working together over time to prepare for the workshop. Individual musicians who are not part of a group will be matched with other musicians if possible.

Each member of the DSQ will work with each group during the course of the day. Participants will break for lunch on their own and then continue coaching sessions throughout the afternoon. At 5 oíclock, there will be a master class in which any of the ensembles can perform for the other participants, with comments and coaching by the DSQ.

Dinner will be provided by RTCA members, and the spouses of participants are invited to join. The day will culminate with an open rehearsal in which the audience will be privy to some of the meticulous and demanding process the DaPonte String Quartet employs in rehearsing a new piece of music.

The cost of the day is $100. Housing at RTCA membersí homes is available for participants traveling long distances. The evening session is open to the public for a cost of $10.
