At Vassar College

June 18 - 21, 1998

Adult Amateur
Chamber Music Workshop

If you consider playing chamber music one of the most joyous ways to spend your days, we hope you will plan to join us at Vassar College in the beautiful Hudson Valley of New York State. This workshop will provide amateur musicians the opportunity to study with renowned musicians including the Arden Trio and Vassar College faculty. We will work together in two 3-day coached sessions in a congenial atmosphere, attend concert together, and enjoy one of the most beautiful Ivy League campuses in the United States. The outstanding music, art and recreational facilities of Vassar are at out disposal, and we will have easy access to many of the cultural activities of the surrounding area, including Tanglewood and Caramoor.

Musical Organization and Coaching

There will be coached sessions for approximately 3-4 hours each day. Each participant will receive an assignment one month before the workshop, and will prepare his/her parts in advance. During the afternoons and evenings there will be scheduled lectures, concerts, and other musical activities both on the Vassar College campus and in the area. Workshop participants will also find ample opportunity for "freelance" playing and playing in larger groups with amateurs and coaches.

Meals and Lodging

Residential participants will be housed in Vassar College dorms and will have their meals in the university dining hall. There will be a welcome dinner for both residential and commuter participants. All meals are included for the duration of each session for residential participants. Commuters will have lunch each day. For people wishing to participate in both sessions and remain on campus for the days between, dorm housing without meals can be arranged..

Who Should Come

If you are an amateur musician (string player, pianist, wind player, or singer) who has attained a level of competency in chamber ensembles (string quartets, piano trios, wind quintets, etc.) and who would enjoy studying particular works under the tutelage of outstanding professional musician coaches, we hope you'll come to Musical Passages at Vassar. High school and college level students, as well as older amateur musicians, will make up our groups. Pre-formed ensembles, especially for wind players, are encouraged to apply, but individuals are equally welcome to join us. Housing space permitting, we welcome non-players to join us for the week.

Fellowships for Young Players

We hope to be able to offer some financial support to young players (post-high school to 30 years old) who would otherwise be unable to attend the workshop. Candidates must be non-professional track musicians, and must agree to serve as Amateur Chamber Music Players "voices" and recruit other young and older ACMP members during and after the workshop. As a condition of grant, ACMP Fellows will register in the Directory and agree to remain affiliated with ACMP for at least three years.

Where we Are and How to Get There

Vassar College is located in Poughkeepsie, New York, 2 hours north of New York City near the beautiful Hudson River. Poughkeepsie is well served by train from New York (Grand Central Station) and by AMTRAK. Taxi from the Poughkeepsie train station to the campus is inexpensive and readily available. The nearest airport is Stewart in Newburgh, about 20 minutes by car or taxi. Car rental is available there, or at any of the 3 New York City airports, each about 2 hours away. A car is not necessary during the workshop week. However, parking can be arranged on campus for those wishing to drive.
