Musical Passages

in Andalucian Mountain Hideaway

December 27, 2000 - January 4, 2001

Play in the Millennium for our third New Years week of chamber music and celebration in the foothills of the Ronda mountains in JIMENA DE LA FRONTERA, a beautiful "pueblo blanco" not far from Malaga. We will join old friends for a relaxing week of chamber music and sampling the wines and cuisine of the south of Spain, during a season of festivities and Spanish warmth. We will join old friends for a relaxing week of chamber music and sampling the wines and cuisine of the south of Spain, during a season of festivities and Spanish warmth. We can join local musicians to celebrate this New Year with a concert at Jemina's Misericoria, and begin the year with another triumph. Last year we played to a stnading room only crowd and a warm welcome from the mayor. 'Cellist Lucy Wilding will again join us on this trip.

Very comfortable accommodations are in single or shared rooms, each with private bath. In order to accommodate what we expect will be an exceptional group, we will use several venues this year. Early bookings are advised and will be assigned according to order of request and availabiility. Musician friends Monica and Peter Becko have created a lovely Casa Rural in the village, El Antiguo Juzgado, which has several suites (double bedroom, living room, kitchen and bath). With 2 pianos and a harpsichord, the Becko hame can provide us several playing venues. The Hostal El Anon, a lovely inn created by our host Suzanne Odell in the heart of this Andalusian village of some 5,000 inhabitants, has only 11 rooms, a lively bar and a wonderful restaurant. We will also stay at the comfortable and authentic Hostal Los Arcos in Estacion de Jimena, only 2 kms. away. Breakfast and lunch or dinner are provided for all participants at the Hostal El Anon and other village restaurants.

The format of the week will find us playing chamber music in small groups for several hours each day, which might include strings, winds, pianos and even voice. Lunch or dinner each day will be taken together with the remainder of the day free to spend as you like (sightseeing, more playing, hiking, biking or just snoozing). Hikers, bikers, and tennis players have been known to enjoy themselves in past years. Playing rooms and music are available at any time for those who are really chamber music junkies. On New Years Eve we usually celebrate early and often, present a concert, have an elegant dinner, even dance in the town square. New Years Day we keep free for recuperation, playing some early music, eating tapas with a hair of the dog that bit us, and relaxing. Each day there will also be time to sample the local fare in nearby restaurants, cafes, and tapas bars, and again visit El Molino del Conde for our final dinner.

Last year we made a trip to the Roman town of Bolonia (Baelo Claudia) with archaeologist friends Hamo and Jean Sassoon, to have a fish meal right on the beach ond look at the digs. This wonderful region offers many interesting side trips: Ronda, Gibraltar, Jerez de la Frontera, and even beautiful Seville. If you want to ride, you can hire mounts at Rancho Los Lobos by the banks of the river Hozgargantua and discover the local conutryside on horseback. Local friends and fiddle players Patrick Elvin and Bob Mann lead the avid hikers.
