May 26 - June 3, 2000

We are very excited to return again to one of the most beautiful and interesting historic sites in France, the lovely Moulin d'Andé, a designated Historic Monument. I have visited here many times to enjoy a concert, a weekend or a longer stay. In the ancient buildings and beautiful park which make up this magical place, you are sure to find yourself in the company of artists, musicians, writers and other creative people. Owner Suzanne Lipinska has worked for over 40 years to create a charming and welcoming cultural and artistic center, with a lovely Théâtre du Moulin for concerts, plays and cabaret performances. Those of us old enough to remember the wonderful French film Jules et Jim will recognize memorable scenes shot there.

We will have the pleasure of sharing the week with members of the Quatuor Arpeggione, well known to audiences throughout Europe and at the Moulin for their stunning performances, and to us as our wonderful coaches at a recent Paris workshop. They will offer us a concert during the week, and will coach chamber music sessions each day.

The Moulin, restored under the Suzanne's artful eye, today offers 35 sleeping rooms with private baths, decorated with period antiques and many lovely things. There are numerous studios and rooms to play in, and the Center has 10 excellent pianos. The theater, which also includes a painting and sculpture gallery, has been outfitted with a lovely dining area where meals are served on an enclosed terrace or in the open air in good weather. Other meals will be taken in the gardens or main dining room overlooking the oldest part of the mill, through which the River Seine passes. Abdullah, whom I remember from my first visit, still oversees the kitchen and truly delightful meals.

The rhythm of the days would include playing in assigned groups each morning, lunch at the Moulin, and afternoons free for more playing or exploring the countryside, as you choose. There are many interesting places to visit nearby, including Monet's home at Giverny, the Chateau Gaillard, Les Andelys, the ancient port of Honfleur and the historic city of Rouen. In the evenings, after dinner, we could play together again, possibly larger chamber works. Assignments for the coached workshop will be sent to you before the course starts, and will include (for string players) pieces to be performed by the Arpeggione in their concert; The Ravel String Quartet, and Beethoven Quartet Op. 18 No. 4. If we have pianists, wind players and singers with us, we will select and assign appropriate chamber works.

From Paris you can travel to Andé by train or car in a little over an hour. The nearest railroad station is St. Pierre de Vauvray, only a short taxi ride to the Moulin. Price and deadlines for applications are listed below. Fees are in French Francs. There are places for about 24-28 people, and order of application (and balance of instruments) will be considered if we need to make these kinds of decisions...

Non-player friends and family are welcome to join you, space permitting.

'Cello rental is possible for people traveling from afar.
