The Manhattan String Quartet

is pleased to announce
their twelfth annual

String Quartet Conference

in Kent, Connecticut

June 11 - 17, 2000

KentMusic offers the experienced amateur, professional and semi-professional string player the opportunity to spend seven gratifying days playing chamber works in an informal atmosphere, as well as attending master classes and concert by the artist-faculty.

CONFERENCE OFFERINGS

Organized Ensembles
At the core of KentMusic is an opportunity to receive intensive coaching on one or two challenging quartets which all participants MUST PREPARE IN ADVANCE. This year the works are Shostakovich Quartet No. 12 and Brahms Quartet in C minor Opus 51 #1. Coaches rotate among quartets which are assigned in different combinations each day.
String Master Classes
Workshops in which technical and musical problems are considered - in separate sessions for violinists, violists and cellists, often focusing on the assigned repertoire.
Free Ensembles
Daily chamber music readings with other participants on an informal self-organized, 'ad lib' basis.
Chamber Music Master Classes
Performances by participating ensembles for their fellow participants - with comments and coaching by members of the artist-faculty. (By special arrangement with the faculty.)
Concert Series
Chamber music concerts with performances by artist-faculty and guests.
Alexander Technique Classes
Classes in Alexander Technique will be available by individual arrangement.

Comments from KentMusic Participants

"Without exception, KentMusic has extremely good coaches, challenging the able and gently boosting the strugglers. The excitement of being led to bring life into our sometimes pedantic efforts is not to be forgotten."

"Thank you, MSQ, for generously sharing your talents and accomplishments. Thank you for communicating your love of chamber music. Thank you for helping us achieve new gaols. KentMusic is a truly memorable musical experience."

"The superb concerts make this conference the one to choose."

"A fine week, worth every penny of your fee. I'll probably return.

"I've been to a lot of music camps and KentMusic is special. You gave me the kind of focused, friendly, interactive experience that is the heart and essence of chamber music. The members of the Manhattan String Quartet and Rachmael Weinstock are not only superb performers, but they are all great coaches with the rare ability to illuminate the music while inducing our diverse band of amateurs to play at the top of our capacity. KentMusic is extraordinary in its achievement of high standards without competition."

"The Manhattan String Quartet's response to this intensely personal music is passionate and ultimately exhilarating. It is the very same refusal to soften the blow of tragedy within the music that makes listening to these performances a cathartic, deeply satisfying experience." - The Washington Times

"The Manhattan String Quartet abets commanding knowledge of these scores with one of the most remarkably blended sounds in the world. Their sound benefits from dead-center intonation and steady emission of tone that makes some of my favorite string quartets sound amateurish by comparison." - Fanfare Magazine

"The Manhattan String Quartet blends understanding, cohesion and sharpness to convey the breadth and brilliance of these involving works." - TIME Magazine

About Kent Music

Begun in 1989 at Kent School in Kent, Connecticut, KentMusic is the continuation of the program the Manhattan String Quartet instituted so successfully at Music Mountain in Falls Village, Connecticut in 1981. Our host, Marvelwood School, has taken over the campus high on Skiff Mountain in Kent that was KentMusic's original setting. The views are breathtaking, the breeze constant, the tennis courts ready for players.

This is a "strings only" chamber music conference focused on quartet-playing. KentMusic limits its enrollment to 60 players so that close contact between artist-faculty and the participants will be ensured. The faculty welcomes pre-formed quartets, as well as individual musicians. KentMusic has a loyal following with some participants traveling from as far away as California, Guatemala and Israel.

THE MANHATTAN STRING QUARTET. Critically acclaimed as one of America's leading ensembles, the Manhattan String Quartet celebrates its 29th season this year. Michael Steinberg of the Boston Globe hailed them as "a natural treasure." Among its many recordings, the Quartet has recorded all of the Shostakovich String Quartets on CD, which TIME Magazine called "One of the most important musical events of 1991." This lead to an engagement the following year as part of Lincoln Center's Performer Series. The Quartet made several trips to the Soviet Union a the invitation of the State Department; they regularly perform and record in Europe and tour this country as well. For the past sixteen years, the Quartet has also served on the faculty of the Adult Chamber Music Conference at Interlochen, Michigan.

David Clampitt. The author of numerous publications in the field of music theory, David Clampitt has taught at the University of Chicago and held a Presidential Fellowship at SUNY Buffalo for 3 years. He was active as a violinist in chamber music and contemporary music ensembles while at SUNY and played frequently with the Buffalo Philharmonic. He was a founding member of the Algonquin String Quartet during his years in New York City. He has coached for a number of years at KentMusic and at the House Party at Wyoda in Fairlee, Vermont. For several years he was Chair of the Music Department at the Kent School. Mr. Clampitt is currently on the faculty of Yale University.
