The DaPonte String Quartet was formed in 1991, and named after Mozart's librettist. The DaPonte is known for its powerful sound and vivid, cleanly etched performances. Through its teaching, and playing, and in workshops and master classes throughout the US and Canada, the DaPonte remains committed to carrying on the Hyubgarian tradition of quartet playing. The Quartet plays on a set of instrument made by Hiroshi Iizuia, a VMSA gold medal winner.Critics are in unanimous agreement that the DaPonte String Quartet is one of the most exciting young groups on the international scene today. Response to their robust and full-bodied performances has been immediate, direct, and enthusiastic:
Edgar Ortenber, violinist with the legendary Budapest String Quartet, wrote of the DaPonte String Quartet:
The DaPonte Quartet was recently the subject of a feature article in the New York Times and CBS presented a piece on them for CBS Sunday Morning. One of the concerts from Music Mountain was broadcast on WQXR in New York City. They have released their second CD featuring the music of Shostakovich, Schulhoff and Comolli. Their third CD has recently been taped and should be released in the near future.
The DaPonte Workshos are three-day weekends designed to provide an intense musical environment in which to play, study, and learn with a minimum of distractions.
The Weekends are intended for adult string players who would like the opportunity to study ensemble techniques with the DaPonte Quartet and have the opportunity to play informally with others. The quartet members will direct the participants through a daily schedule of coached sessions designed to improve the musical ability of each participant through work with the chamber music literature.
The Weekends are open to, and will accept, string players with moderate to excellent ability. It is available to both individuals and pre-existing quartets. We accept pre-formed quartets at any level. The workshop will be limited to eight groups so that each group received coaching at least 50% of the time. Acceptance is based on instrumentation needs and the date we receive the application.
We will assign individual string players to groups based on ability as reflected in self evaluation forms. The member of the quartet will work with participants on the interpretation of musical styles represented in the literature chosen for the ensemble. Assignments of music will be made two to three weeks before the Weekend.
REFUNDS ARE AVAILABLE until four weeks before each workshop.
PAYMENT IN FULL is due four weeks before each workshop. Musical assignments will be made two to three weeks prior to each workshop.
