The Intimate Circle of Brahms & the Schumanns

On October 1, 1853, a meeting took place that was to irrevocably change three lives: Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck Schumann. The twenty-year-old Brahms, armed with a reference from the famous violinist and mutual friend Joseph Joachim, came to call on the well-known musical couple in Dusseldorf.

What did this meeting mean to each of them? Who were they and how did their lives, personally and musically, intertwine?

They clearly partook of the same culture, the same rich Romantic musical language, and the same basic musical values, but each had an individual musical persona. How might we characterize the particularities of each as composers?

Join Triple Helix for an intimate "visit" with Brahms and the Schumanns, via readings from their letters and diaries. A discussion and performance of Clara Schumann's Trio op. 17, Robert Schumann's 2nd Trio in F Major, Op. 80, and Brahms' B Major Trio, Op. 8 will highlight the unique compositional process for each, as well as the musical sharing which deeply informed their lifelong friendships.

Tickets: $18; $15 Seniors/Students (Discount available if you also attend the Workshop. See below for details.) Please call (617)277-4593 to reserve tickets.
